EMBRYO DONATION
Embryo donation is a preferred practice in both male and female partners if they have infertility problems that cannot be overcome by standard IVF methods. Although frozen embryos left over after pregnancy donated by couples undergoing IVF treatment are also used in embryo donation in some countries, only embryos obtained by using donor eggs and sperm can be legally used in Cyprus.
SELECTION OF DONORS
As a donor, as it is applied in oocyte and sperm donation, it is used physically (ethnicity, skin-eye-hair color, body structure, etc.) by selecting those that are similar to the couple and compatible with blood type.
EMBRYO DONATION PROCESS
It is not necessary to carry out any actions for the male partner in the preparation of the receiving couple. The preparation process of the female partner is as follows:
- Interview with the specialist physician: In this interview, your health history history will be taken, physical examination and necessary tests will be planned.
- Meeting with the coordinator: Your transportation and accommodation organizations will be planned at this meeting. Apart from medical issues, all the details of the treatment process will be discussed and your profile forms will be arranged. The selection of a sperm donor will also be determined at this stage.
- Psychological counseling: If couples wish, they can get counseling about their questions about the donation process and its aftermath and their social or psychological concerns.
- Application of tests: Relevant screening tests are requested for the woman.
- Ultrasonographic examination: It is applied to analyze the structure of the uterus. If necessary, hysteroscopic examination may be requested additionally.
- HSG (Hysterosalpingography): It is requested to evaluate the tubes as well as the structure of the uterus. Thus, processes that may prevent embryo implantation, such as hydrosalpinx, are evaluated.
- Introduction of drugs for ovarian stimulation
- Determining your control appointments to follow the development of your eggs during the treatment process (follicle follow-up)
- Egg collection and embryo culture: A cracking needle will be applied on the day determined by your physician according to follicle follow-up and egg collection process will be performed after about 36 hours. Apply. The mature eggs collected in this process are microinjected with the donor sperms selected on the same day. The next day, fertilization control is performed and then the appropriate transfer day is planned by following the embryo development. In this process, our center is informed daily by the embryology laboratory about the status of your embryos.
- Embryo biopsy: If genetic diagnosis is planned in embryos and FISH method is preferred, biopsy is applied on the 3rd day to embryos that reach sufficient development level and quality and transfer can be performed in the same cycle. If the NPPS method is preferred, the embryos are frozen after the embryo biopsy process on the 5th day.
- Embryo transfer: In line with the quality of the developing embryos, it will be determined how many embryos will be transferred and the selected embryos will be transferred to your uterus. The transfer process is simple and short-lived (about 15 minutes). After a short rest after the procedure, you will be able to return to your daily life. If the embryos have been subjected to the FISH test for genetic diagnosis, the embryo transfer will be performed in the same month 2 days after the test, while if the embryos are frozen after the NGS test is performed, your embryo transfer will be performed the next month.
- Pregnancy: According to the development stage of the transferred embryos, the result will be determined by a pregnancy test (Beta hCG) to be examined from the blood 9 or 12 days after the transfer. If a positive result is obtained, it is necessary to check the gestational sac with ultrasound examination 2-3 weeks after the test.
SUCCESS RATES IN EMBRYO DONATION
Since reproductive cells obtained from young and healthy donors are used, embryo donation is the application with the highest success rate among donation applications. For this reason, the most important factor determining success is to carefully examine whether the recipient’s uterus is suitable for the attachment of the embryo and to prepare it in the most appropriate way for transfer. In our center, thanks to meticulously carried out examinations and preparation processes, we achieve success rates of up to 85% in embryo donation.
PRIVACY
In embryo donation application, the identities of the donors and the recipient are kept confidential. Applying couples can only access the information in the profile form of the donors, photograph, identity and contact information are kept confidential. In the same way, donors do not have access to the information of couples in which reproductive cells are used.
LEGAL STATUS
IVF and donation treatment processes in Cyprus are subject to the Law No. 57/2014 “Governing the Rules for Human Cell, Tissue and Organ Transplantation”. According to this law:
- The age of the egg donor must be between 18-35 years old.
- Body mass index should be in the range of 19-29.
- The donor sperms to be used must be brought from accredited sperm banks.
- The age of the sperm donor should be between 20-45 years.
- In donor cycles, parameters such as the ages of the donor and recipient, their prognosis and the quality of the embryos to be transferred are included and the number of transfers is decided in accordance with the limitations in IVF cycles.
In order to perform embryo transfer in people over 45 years of age;
- It is necessary to medically document that there is no obstacle to pregnancy by the Internal Medicine and Cardiology specialist. This reporting process can only be carried out in a few centers within Cyprus and our center is one of them.
- If the Ethics Approval Committee deems it necessary, additional examinations should be carried out.
